Recently, Samsung revealed its new line-up of folding phones including the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and the Galaxy Z Flip 5. Incase you don't know, the Fold is essentially a phone that can unfold into a tablet while the Flip is a phone that can fold in half. It seems like this year Samsung is bringing quite a few improvements to their upcoming devices.
Starting off with the Galaxy Z Fold 5, it is hard to talk about this device without mentioning its 7.6" display. Unlike previous versions, this time around Samsung has managed to ensure that, when folded, none of the inner display is visible. This would cause problems for previous versions because dust and other particles could land on the main display through the gap that the hinge left open. The new hinge also helps with the thickness of the phone which is now just 13.4mm. That's almost as thin as a regular phone.
With a massive main display means that this phone is great for watching all types of shows or movies. It is even good for gaming since it runs on the latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor. Luckily, most apps and websites take advantage of the entire screen so it truly feels like a foldable tablet. What adds to this is the software behind it. It allows users to multitask which means they can use multiple apps at a time. This is further supported by the built in S Pen which allows for further precision when using multiple apps at once.
Now onto the Galaxy Z Flip 5, built with portability in mind. Although you wouldn't expect it, this phone also has two screens. These are its main display and a mini display located near the phone's main camera. While the second display is smaller, it is large enough to use basic apps such as map or messaging apps. Although it is best suited for widgets and notification viewing it can even be used to take selfies using the phone's main camera. This means that you basically don't have to use the worse front facing camera at all.
Like the Z Fold 5, the Z Flip 5 also comes packed with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor. With it, the Z Flip 5 is also able to multitask using a split screen view where the top and bottom halves are used for different apps. It also takes advantage of the folding screen by allowing apps to appear differently when the screen is kept folded at an angle. For example, it can be used as a stand for the camera where the top half displays the video and the bottom half is used for controls. This makes the Z Flip 5 feel like quite a different device than regular phones.
Overall, Samsung's new devices are packed with features that will hopefully push the development of folding devices forwards. In my opinion, if you are in the situation where you need the extra screen or you find carrying a regular phone tough, I would definitely recommend one of these phones as long as you are aware of the two major downsides with folding phones. One of which is the main camera as it isn't as good as those of flagship phones. The other is battery life since so much internal space is given to the screens and other components. In future years these problems are likely to be solved in which case I think that folding phones will start being used instead of the phones that we have now.
